THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD AS SERVED

THROUGH GOD’S GIFT OF MUSIC

When you say the word “Methodist” to most people, no matter what their church-going history might be, they almost always will respond with the word “singing”!. Mayo UMC is no different.   We are indeed a singing church. Our Music Ministry is a fairly accurate reflection of our church’s ministry in general. While we embrace a traditional approach to hymn singing (we sing out of hymnals), we make every effort to choose music that complements the sermon and scriptures planned for the day. So we cover the gamut from “old favorites”, “gospel” to  “contemporary”.

We are blessed with a committed choir that looks upon Sunday’s anthem as an integral part of the day’s message as opposed to a musical “performance”. The choir sings at the 11:00 a.m.  service except the second Sunday of the month when the Youth fellowship takes full charge of the worship service including both the spoken and sung elements.

The 11:00 a.m. service is preceded by a “spiritual warm-up” hymn sing at 10:50 a.m. when members of the congregation choose their favorite hymns to get us up and ready to receive God’s message for the day.

The Chancel Choir rehearses every Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. and the Youth Fellowship Ensemble practices briefly after the 11:00 a.m. service.

Although not a regular singing group, our small Sunday School Singers play an important role in our annual Christmas season.

In short…there is something for everyone. Your suggestions, thoughts, requests, and participation are welcomed! Rehearsals usually last an hour and fifteen minutes and are fun.  If you have any questions or interest in joining us, speak to any choir member (they’re the ones in the blue robes!) or our Organist and Director. Everyone is welcome!
